Photographs and Performances (70's & 80's)

I divided the photographs into two groups: the single image shots of my exposed body, which were photographed prior to 1977, and multiple images of my covered body begun in 1977 (except for one maverick from 1970).

The four single image photographs each propose an embodied spiritual state to consider: comfort in the arms of the all knowing empirical Goddess; the revelations of our collective unconscious; dark adventures most awesome; and those inept but sincere attempts at transcendence.

The second group engages a cinematic approach to presenting a progression of multiple photographs in a single piece. Covering my body, plus setting a long time exposure on the camera, facilitated creating a blurred image which further suggests movement and the passage of time.

Cliff Hanger presents three photographic images of a performance documenting rolling off a cliff with reference to Yves Klein's leap from a building in Paris in 1960; evoking, again, the edge as a test site.

"If the discourse is structured by the privileged signifier, SHE appears as a Monster. If the discourse is structured by the primary signifier, SHE appears as a Goddess...If SHE appeared what you have felt about HER reflects who you are."- J.C. Smith and Carla J. Ferstman, The Castration of Oedipus: Feminism, Psychoanalysis and the Will to Power.

Trans-formation Series: Dea of Syria #4, 1975
